3rd Hour
Digital Photography I
Matthew Harmon
When I first came in to this class, I was very far from excited. I've never though of myself as a good photographer, and even now I think that I'm not that great. With that being said, I think I've made a lot of progress over the trimester and have actually gained a lot of skill. Considering my first photo that was covered with brush and honestly look pretty terrible, as well as my 4th and 5th photos that utilized depth of field and good lighting, I would say I learned a whole lot about photography. With that being said, I feel like I wasn't able to develop my skills when it comes to photoshop. I think that I never really had any interest in using the program, so I wasn't able to really put all my effort into editing a photo. However, I do feel like I learned a bit about about how to use it, but I'm not sure I'll use those skills in the future. Overall, I feel like I learned a lot during this class and I think I have some confidence about taking photos. Clearly there is a huge difference between the two photos above. One has a ton of distractions and isn't very appealing to the eye. While the other utilizes the rule of thirds and uses color and depth of field to make an actually good looking picture. Additionally, when I first began taking photos I struggled to use the aperture and shutter speed settings to control the light in my pictures. But, as I gained some experience I was able to take photos that weren't super dark and dull.

The purpose of this assignment was to use photoshop to create visual puns. Later, the class will try and find the meaning of the images. I found this assignment to be rather fun. Considering that the class was allowed to use rather goofy ideas, I think that as a whole we enjoyed it. With that being said, I don't think I learned anything, but I do feel that I reinforced some techniques
For our final photo assignment, we were we used basic composition skills to take a photograph. In my case, I decided to take a normal picture, but turn it black and white with the exception of one piece of the photo. Aperture: f/2.8 ISO: 400 Shutter speed: 1/25 During this assignment, I struggled to come up with an idea. With that being said, I thought I would use photoshop to spruce my photo up. Overall, I think my final piece came out ok, but I think that I could have altered it a little more.
The purpose of this assignment was to look up tutorials on the internet and follow them to create new images in photoshop. As someone who struggles with photoshop, I was only able to create three images. https://photoshopstar.com/mythical-scenery-photoshop/ - Image on the left left https://www.photoshoptutorials.ws/photoshop-tutorials/photo-manipulation/create-stunning-surreal-landscape/ - Image in middle https://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/texture-map/ - Image on the right As someone who struggles with photoshop, I found this assignment to be very helpful. Additionally, with the exception of the photo on the right, I feel like I did a fairly good job. With that being said, I still don't have that big of an interest in using photoshop, so I didn't really enjoy this assignment too much. I feel like all the tutorials that I used provided just enough detail to get their message across. Overall, this was an interesting assignment.
The purpose of this assignment was to choose another subject to photograph while implementing basic composition techniques. In my case, I utilized still life as the subject of my photograph. Aperture: f/2.8 Shutter Speed: 1/30 ISO: 125 This assignment went fairly well, as the photo turned out alright. I feel that this was the first assignment where I didn't learn anything. We're at the point in the trimester where all we can really do is demonstrate the techniques we've already learned. Overall, this assignment went over fairly well.
The purpose of this assignment was to take multiple photos of the same scene with someone posing in different locations. We then would use photoshop to make it look like the person is in multiple places at once. I thought this assignment was really interesting. With that being said, I thought it was a little difficult to work with photoshop and delete shadows. In addition, there would often be little movements in the camera that would result in some things overlapping. All in all, I had a good time with this assignment.
For our fifth photo assignment, we were tasked with choosing another subject to photograph. In my case, I decided to use macro as my subject. Aperture: f/3.5 Shutter speed: 1/40 ISO: 400 I struggled to keep the subject of the photograph in focus this time, as zooming in so close to an object kind of freaked the camera out. Overall, I feel that I'm beginning to figure out how to make my pictures more visually pleasing. With that being said, I still feel that I'm struggling to utilize some composition techniques.
The purpose of this assignment was to take a photo on campus, and then transform said photo, using photoshop, into something cool. I chose to turn the my photo into a Saline High School/Bikini Bottom mesh. I actually enjoyed this assignment. It was fun to be creative and use our minds to create something special. With that being said, it was quite annoying when photos we got from the internet went in to photoshop all grainy.
The purpose of this assignment was to a fourth subject to photograph. In my case, I decided to turn a photograph black and white. We should be using basic composition techniques, as well as demonstrating how to change exposure on our cameras. Aperture: f/2.8 Shutter speed: 1/640 ISO: 80 During this assignment, I learned that managing both the lighting and depth of field is rather challenging, especially with a mediocre camera. I do think that I was able to manage the lighting rather well in this case, and I think I am figuring out techniques that make my photos more visually pleasing.
The purpose of this assignment was to demonstrate our ability to create panoramic photos. We first took at least 3 photos and then used photoshop to merge them together into one single picture. During this assignment, I learned the basics on how to create panoramic shots. I also learned that when used correctly, they can yield pretty cool photos. I enjoyed this assignment, as it was simple and offered a knew technique we can use in further assignments.
